What is Makai?

Makai is a boat rental marketplace that connects renters with captained boat charters. We provide scheduling, payment, and communication tools so you can easily book and enjoy time on the water.

Do I need a membership to use Makai?

No membership is required. Simply create a free account to browse vessels and book your next trip.

Where is Makai available?

Makai is currently focused on the United States, with vessels available in Florida and expanding to other coastal regions.

For Renters

How do I book a boat?

Browse available vessels, select your preferred date and time, and submit a booking request. The vessel owner will review and approve your request within 24 hours. Once approved, your payment is processed and you're all set.

Do I need a boating license?

No. All Makai charters come with a licensed captain, so you don't need any boating experience or license. Just show up and enjoy.

How does payment work?

Payment is processed securely through Stripe when the owner approves your booking. Your card is charged the listing price plus a 7% service fee. Tips for the crew are separate and optional.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellation policies vary by vessel and are displayed at the time of booking. Generally, cancellations made well in advance may receive a full or partial refund. Weather-related cancellations are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Can I message the captain before booking?

Yes. You can communicate with vessel owners and captains through the Makai messaging system before and after booking.

For Boat Owners

How do I list my boat on Makai?

Download the Makai app, create an account, and start the vessel listing process. You'll need to provide vessel details, photos, insurance documentation, and captain credentials. Once verified, your listing goes live.

Is it free to list my boat?

Yes, listing your vessel is completely free. Makai only charges a 7% commission on completed bookings, plus standard payment processing fees.

What verification is required?

We require valid vessel insurance, registration documents, and proof that your captain holds appropriate USCG licensing. This ensures safety for all users.

How and when do I get paid?

Payments are deposited to your linked bank account through Stripe Connect. Payouts are processed after each completed booking, minus the 7% Makai commission and processing fees.

Can I set my own prices?

Absolutely. You have full control over your pricing, including per-hour rates, per-person pricing, or whole-boat rates. You can also set minimum booking durations.

Can I assign a captain?

Yes. You can be the captain yourself or assign a licensed captain to your vessel through the app. Captains get their own login to manage schedules and communicate with renters.

Safety & Trust

How does Makai verify vessels?

All vessels go through a verification process that includes checking insurance coverage, registration validity, and captain licensing. Listings can be suspended if documentation expires.

Is my payment information secure?

Yes. All payments are processed through Stripe, which is PCI-DSS Level 1 certified. Makai never stores your full credit card number.

What about weather?

Safety comes first. If conditions are unsafe, the captain has the authority to cancel or modify the trip. Weather-related cancellations are handled between the renter and owner, with Makai support available to help.
